The history of this beautiful yacht is.
She was purchased new in 2001 by a gentleman in Sydney who purchased La Mouette
for his son ( lucky Boy ) however his son was more into speed and powerboats
so the Father sold La Mouette to a fellow in Blairgowie Victoria.
He was a fastidious man and La Mouette was treated like a queen for the next
year or so. Unfortunately his wife developed a painful back problem and was
unable to help him with sailing La Mouette. He decided to sell her and I was
the lucky man to purchase a Catalina 380 with 120 hours on the Yanmar Diesel.
I still remember picking her up, the way he handed her over with a slight tear
in his eye, her Hull and interior was better than you would expect on a new
Yacht. I proudly sailed her back to St Kilda with the previous owner watching
us most the way.
From there my partner and I looked after and learned how to sail her properly,
The first 6 months we struggled to get 5 knots of hull speed so I decided to
have her slipped and do some major work on her rigging, hull and propulsion
system.
I replaced the 3 blade prop with a Gori Folding ( $5000.00 ) this prop is unique
because it actually has two different pitch configurations, this enables you
to motor sail with the engine just ticking over at 1200 RPM and comfortably
achieving 6 to 7 knots, and also folds down when under sail. This alone gave
us 1 knot extra hull speed.
Then I had the rigging set by an expert, he told me the way she was setup it
was a wonder she ever pointed at all.
Then I attacked the sails, I purchased a 1.5 ounce Asymmetrical Spinnaker and
a new Genoa 150% from Doyle sails ( $7500 ) I also had the original head sail
cut down for a heavy weather sail, or spare sail.
Finally I installed a Navman G-Pilot ( auto pilot ) ( $5000 ) My partner was
thinking I was mad at this stage. And finally the Hull was scrapped and anti
fouled.
Back in the water we quickly had her cruising a 7 knots in 12 knots of true
breeze and when the wind picks up we could easily hit 8 to 9 knots depending
on point of sail. We recently had her doing 11 knots, there was a 35 knot gust
right behind us at the time, and I think we did surf a little also. Her Theoretical
Hull speed is 7.5 knots so I know we have her setup perfectly.
La Mouette is now perfectly set up for long distance cruising or simply day sailing or racing, we have never raced her but I do occasionally tuck in on a bay race and see how she shapes up, I can honestly say I sail away from similar yachts and some 42 footers plus find it hard to keep up with La Mouette.
La Mouette is at here best in 10 to 15 knots of true breeze, you can set the
sails, engage G-Pilot ( I call him Pedro ) and sit back with a wine or Tea and
enjoy everything sailing has to offer. Catalina Yachts are known for there strong
construction and beautiful interiors ( 6ft 6in Head room ) and the beds are
fully
Sprung mattresses, very important after a long day on the water.
We have decided to move on to a larger Yacht 46 feet so we can do some serious blue water sailing, we have owned La Mouette for 3 years and she has never let us down, in fact she has taught us how to sail and how to enjoy this beautiful pastime of sailing.
I wonder who the next lucky owners will be.
