Buying Penned Boats

Whether you need a tough boat for fishing and diving, or you're looking to cruise and entertain in luxury and opulence, on day trips with the family, work trips to congratulate the office or extended cruising for a unique holiday around Australia, Boatlocator is the smart way to buy your next boat. Through our website and wide network of contacts we can offer you a wider range of boats from all over Australia, but to work out where to start we always need to ask a few questions:

What do you want to use it for: Fishing, diving, overnighting, extended cruising? And where do you want to use it?

In any boat, the designer has to weigh up a large number of compromises to build a vessel that will do a job, in the space available, in a given set of conditions. The challenge for Boatlocator, as your boat broker, is to find you a vessel with the right balances between stability and sea handling, power and economy, accommodation and deck space, etc, that will match the way you want to use your boat, where you want to use it and get everyone home safely.

How many people will be on board? How many young kids, teenagers, adults and/or grandparents?

To make sure everyone has a good day boating and gets home safely you need to make sure everyone can get on and off the boat, small children won't fall overboard and you need to carry enough safety gear for all on board. Other things to consider are some people may have difficulty getting up and down a flybridge ladder, there needs to be enough cockpit space so you're not falling over each other and you need to make sure sleeping arrangements, if required, will be comfortable enough for everyone.

Where are you going to pen or moor it?

If you already own or lease a pen, we need to know the maximum length your new boat can be and if you're buying a bigger multi-hull you'll need to make sure you'll fit at a near by boat lifter for maintenance and repairs. You also need to let us know if you have height restrictions to get under bridges. If don't already have somewhere to keep a boat, we'll narrow our search down to boats being sold with pens and moorings.

What if you find the right yacht on our site, but its interstate?

There’s a bit to do before trucking most penned boats. Flybridge cruisers will need the bimini taken down, or if they have a hard top you might need a boiler maker or shipwright to do the job. There will be wiring for lights, masts and antennae that will need careful handling and the parts removed will need wrapping and storing somewhere on the vessel. Depending on your boat and the truck, you may also need a jinker or cradle to secure the vessel and prevent keel damage. The costs involved depend on the truck, escort(s) if required for the size of the vessel, lifting, de-rigging and packing, re-rigging and possibly fabricating a cradle or other supports.

But if you’ve found the right boat, you don’t have to worry about it! When you buy a boat on Boatlocator.com.au, as part of the service we’ll organise transport quotes if required and negotiate with truckies on your behalf. Remember, while any advertising website can show you yachts from all over Australia, only Boatlocator is staffed by people who actually help you buy one, with the experience you need to put an interstate deal together and get your new vessel home safely.

Finance and Insurance

Another reason Boatlocator is the smart way to buy your next boat is we help you arrange finance and insurance for boats we sell, saving your time and helping your deal go smoothly. Boats can be financed a number of ways and we have experience dealing with finance brokers from all over Australia helping our customers purchase all sorts of boats. For insurance, we are agents for both Nautilus and Club Marine, who insure most of our trailer boats, and we’ll do the leg work for you to arrange quotes, surveys and forward vessel details to the insurer of your choice.
