Buying Yachts

From trailer sailers and racing yachts, to mid size yachts, to world cruising yachts and catamarans, every single one we've sold has been unique in some way, reflecting the personality and preferences of it's owner. Through our website and wide network of contacts we can offer you a wider range of yachts than a traditional broker, so its important that we answer a few questions to see where we should start looking:

What do you want to use it for: Racing, Cruising, Overnight Stays, Bluewater Sailing? And where do you want to use it?

In designing a vessel, an architect must weigh up a vast number of compromises between accommodation, comfort, weight, speed, sea handling and expense to create a yacht that will meet the client's requirements, with the space available and in the required sea conditions. Pre owned yachts are as individual as their owners, so our first task as your broker is understanding your basic requirements, to allow us to find a vessel which be a suitable starting point for you to make your own.

How many people will be on board? How many young kids, teenagers, adults and/or grandparents?

To make sure everyone has a good day boating and gets home safely you need to make sure everyone can get on and off the boat, small children won't fall overboard and you need to carry enough safety gear for all on board. You need to consider whether or not you and your crew will be able to handle the yacht in all conditions, there needs to be enough cockpit space so you're not falling over each other and you need to make sure sleeping arrangements, if required, will be comfortable enough to avoid cabin fever.

Where are you going to pen or moor it?

If you already own or lease a pen, we need to know the maximum length your new boat can be and if you're buying a bigger multi-hull you'll need to make sure you'll fit at a near by boat lifter for maintenance and repairs. You also need to let us know if you have height restrictions to get under bridges. If don't already have somewhere to keep a boat, we'll narrow our search down to yachts being sold with pens and moorings.

What if you find the right yacht on our site, but its interstate?

If sailing her home is not an option, road transport for yachts is usually feasible however, with the exception of trailer sailers, is a specialist job. The masts, sails and rigging require careful attention during de-rigging and packing to make sure they aren’t damaged in transit and can be easily reassembled on arrival. Depending on your yacht and the truck you may also require a jinker or cradle to secure the vessel and prevent keel damage. The costs involved depend on the truck, escort(s) if required for the size of the vessel, lifting, de-rigging and packing, re-rigging and possibly fabricating a cradle or other supports.

If that sounds like a lot of organisation, don’t worry! When you buy a yacht on Boatlocator.com.au, as part of the service we’ll organise transport quotes if required and negotiate with truckies on your behalf. Remember, while any advertising website can show you yachts from all over Australia, only Boatlocator is staffed by people who actually help you buy one, with the experience you need to put an interstate deal together and get your new vessel home safely.

Finance and Insurance

Another reason Boatlocator is the smart way to buy your next trailer boat is we help you arrange finance and insurance for yachts we sell, saving your time and helping your deal go smoothly. Boats can be financed a number of ways and we have experience dealing with finance brokers from all over Australia helping our customers purchase yachts of all descriptions. For insurance, we are agents for both Nautilus and Club Marine, who insure most of our trailer boats, and we’ll do the leg work for you to arrange quotes, surveys and forward vessel details to the insurer of your choice.
